Ohana Dinner is Great for Families, Not for Couples

“The Ohana dinner is great for families, not so great for couples looking for a romantic experience. Unless you like being hit by coconuts.”

After our first day in the parks we decided that we would make it a pretty early night so that we could get up early for a character breakfast.  Since we still wanted to see fireworks, we decided to eat at Ohana so that we could watch them from the beach at the Polynesian.  The dinner started out on a nice note, with some delicious bread and went quickly downhill from there.  I didn’t care for the food that came to the table, although there was plenty of it.  Pot stickers are my most favorite things in the world and I did not at all like them here. My fiance (he had proposed the night before!) felt much the same.  I think we might have liked one of the meats brought around, but that was about it.

Around the time we were enjoying the view through the window even though we were sitting right on the walkway of the restaurant, the singer came out.  Now she was talented, sure, but as soon as she started her set it was impossible to have a conversation.  It also became impossible to enjoy ourselves because she called all the kids up to do various things that caused parents to start flinging themselves around to take pictures.  Then the coconut race started, where kids get brooms to bat coconuts around the walkway.  Since we were seated on the walkway?  My ankle got hit more than once.  Now image a very open restaurant where there’s a bunch of kids hitting coconuts with brooms.  They are not doing it silently.  We pretty much wanted to leave right after that.

But there was still dessert!  Dessert was a bananas foster bread pudding, which neither of us thought we would like but it was DELICIOUS.  I have the recipe and I really need to make that someday.  I wish I had the recipe for their bread!   Then they topped the night by giving us a celebration cupcake.

Now let me say that I appreciated the gesture.  But it was the most disgusting cupcake I have ever tasted, which is a feat considering it was just a vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting.  We each had a bite, grimaced, and then quickly tried to get out of there without tripping on children.

While I’m sure the kids all had fun, it was definitely not the place to go for a romantic evening!  We ended up skipping the fireworks and just going back to our hotel.
