Disney Cruise Line: Grand Cayman - Snorkeling

It’s here, it’s finally here! Our first port and our first port adventure!

Grand Cayman was our first stop on the Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Fantasy. We were a little nervous about it because we had chosen to do the snorkeling port adventure and neither of us had ever done snorkeling before. However, we had a great time! Grand Cayman was beautiful and the weather was perfect. For this port you have to take a smaller boat from the Fantasy to reach the shore. I thought this was actually really fun and it took you right into a pretty touristy area that was still pretty picturesque.

Now I grew up near the ocean but had never done any “real” snorkeling and Adam had grown up landlocked so he had NEVER done anything even approaching snorkeling, so we were both excited and nervous. Luckily the crew of the boat we were on were fantastic at explaining all the equipment, how to put it on, what to watch out for, and how there was no way you could be eaten by a shark. Seriously. Not that I was worried about that.

Okay. I may have been a little worried about that. But the crew was funny and knowledgable, so we were able to relax, get used to the floppy fins and snorkel, and have fun. Even if you aren’t a strong swimmer, they have ways of keeping you afloat.

Pro tip: tarpin look like sharks but aren’t and they will ask you not to yell “shark!” when you see a tarpin. That’s also not a picture of a tarpin up above, but I’m pretty sure everyone’s good at googling these days. We went to two different spots to snorkel–first a reef where we saw a bunch of delightful, colorful fish, and then over a sunken ship! That was super cool. It turns out that fish LOVE shipwrecks so there were lots and lots of them everywhere. Definitely make sure you bring a waterproof, underwater camera for this one. Totally worth it!

One thing Grand Cayman is apparently famous for are their rum cakes–we didn’t end up with enough time to go shopping, but I am told you should pick one of those up.

After you go snorkeling though. Cause it was super fun!
